I have now watched both Citizen Kane and Super Mario Bros. (1993) in the last 48 hours. Truly, both are pinnacles of cinema.

Watched this with my youngest kid in 4k thanks to the fantastic restoration available on the Internet Archive. Looked surprisingly great and considering it is from only one year after the original Super Mario Bros. for NES there were a number of characters rendered surprisingly close to what they’d eventually look like in games 20+ years later. Definitely bonkers in some places and all the toad characters are certifiably horrifying.
Now I’m looking forward to the new Super Mario Bros movie’s post credit scene revealing the hot anime Prince Haru spinoff.

So is the premise every single person in this world is a hitman? Even in public people are either trying to kill Johnathan Wick or they’re completely unfazed by the constant stabbing and headshots feet away from them. Why are the henchmen (and the lone henchwoman who literally can’t speak) all so willing to get shot in the face for the bad guy?

MLB and Braves Opening Day is here. Will watch probably 120+ games via MLB.tv between now and end of season. Since 2020, Braves games (mostly on mute) have been back as a background of my daily life/work/tv/podcast. Great and comforting to have it back.
First baserunner/batter of the season and Braves have already stolen a base. (Primer on all the 2023 rules changes for those who are curious.)
I am so glad to be done with the musical anthology section of my Disney Animation Studios chronological rewatch. I assume I can safely literally blame Hitler for this down period between 1942 and 1950?
The Pecos Bill segment was ok, maybe I would have liked the whole thing better if I hadn’t just watched Make Mine Music and the other anthologies.

The framing device with Candice Bergen’s weird ventriloquist father takes off half a star from this by ruining Mickey and The Beanstalk. He wasn’t even very good at keeping his mouth from moving and half the time he did the dummies’ lines from off camera.
And according to Candice it sounds like he loved that puppet more than he loved her. (Which considering the puppet was in his will and she wasn’t seems like it might be true.)

Occasionally horny, often trippy, usually probably racist, but boy is it amazing to look at. The parts overlaying animation over live action are particularly great.
The Three Caballeros song (and reprises) are the only bits that completely worked for me, and that’s likely at least partially due to my great affection for the ride in the World Showcase at EPCOT.

Kids and I love the Beetlejuice The Musical cast recording so much that I finally caught up with this I maybe for the first time so I could see if kids would be ok watching.
I think I might have tried to watch this when I was younger but thought it was too creepy. I certainly recognize bits and pieces. I was surprised how little Beetlejuice is actually in Beetlejuice.
Definitely still to creepy/gross/scary to show my kids.

Tonally all over the place. Apparently Bryan Adams thought Edward should sing songs that sound like awkward cheesy Bryan Adams songs in the middle of a Broadway musical. It was okay when it was being fun or silly, but really missed anytime it was trying to be romantic or sincere. Performances were fine but music and lyrics were rough.
Hearing Alec Baldwin’s voice from Ben Affleck’s face and Steve Buscemi’s voice coming out of a Jason Priestly lookalike is very confusing.
Movie is actually moderately better and better looking than I expected though. How do they shoot ghosts with bullets though?
